I am creating a series of paintings of endangered species, to raise awareness of the 6th mass extinction event.

The paintings have a surreal edge, as if the animals have been painted from a dream or a memory.

Here is the third in the series, an Asian elephant. Asian elephants are listed as endangered by the IUCN. Many factors have led to this, for example the ivory trade, habitat destruction and conflicts with local people. Elephants are used as working animals in Asia and are commonly exploited for human entertainment. I met the elephant this painting is based on while volunteering at the WFFT sanctuary in Thailand. She is at least happy now, in her retirement.

Inspired by the boat trip from the Isle of Mull back to mainland Scotland after a long weekend of hiking in the rain. The sun finally and spectacularly broke through the clouds as we left the island behind.

I drew this leafy guy some time ago using oil pastels. I have always felt as though we as a species are dangerously disassociating ourselves from the natural world that birthed us, so I like to create art that bridges that gap and reminds people that we are part of nature, not separate from it.
